Cold brew coffee is unbelievably easy to make at home, as well as cost-effective.  Cold brew is made by steeping coarse coffee grounds in cold water for 12-24 hours.  The resulting strained coffee is lower in acidity than hot coffee and tends to have a less bitter flavor.  We have a couple options for some great cold brew – the 48 oz Toddy Cold Brew System, and the Coffee Sock Mason Cold Brew Filter.

The Coffee Sock Cold Brew Filter pairs perfectly with a half gallon size jar to make a rich batch of coffee.  In general, a 1:4 ratio of coffee grounds to water is a good rule of thumb for a smooth, strong brew.  We will talk about using that cold brew method below.

How to use your Coffee Sock Cold Brew System:

  • First, boil your new filter in fresh water for 10 minutes to clean and shrink.
  • Pour in coarsely ground coffee of your choice.  (fine ground will produce a weaker brew and is harder to strain, while coarse allows for better flow and a better, stronger brew)
  • Very slowly pour in cool water over the grounds until the jar is filled.  Close up the filter and pull the top of the filter through the loop.
  • Place the lid onto the jar and let sit at room temperature for 12-24 hours, as desired.
  • Pull the filter out of the jar and set on the ring to allow the coffee to drain from the inside of the filter.  Discard the grounds and rinse the filter clean and hang to dry.
  • Place your jar of cold brew in the refrigerator to enjoy at your leisure!  Keeps for about a week, if it lasts that long.
