With the holidays behind us we are looking ahead to a new and exciting season in our nursery. Highlights include locally grown bare root fruit trees that should be arriving mid month with a nice selection of apples, apricots, cherries, peaches, pears, plums, and nectarines! Check out our info on how to plant and care for Bare Root Fruit Trees. Look for winter hardy favorites like hellebores from Northwest nursery, colorful primroses, and two of our favorite fragrant shrubs, Winter Daphne and Sweet Box (Sarcococca) all arriving later this month!
Our garden department is filling up with seed starting supplies, and everything you need for success in your garden this year. Let’s get growing!
Planning:
Planning and Prepping are the first things to do when thinking about your garden this year. Gardeners love to plan, and many of us are looking through our favorite seed catalogs with anticipation of all the vegetable, herb, and flower choices for the new year. Consider keeping a Gardening Journal to plan what crops you would like to grow and where- also to take notes you can reference in the years to come!
Planting:
It’s time to start Planting Seeds Indoors. The excitement of growing plants from seed is unmatched for many, and we are proud to offer a large and diverse selection of seeds for the home gardener. Look for longtime favorites, along with 2023 new varieties from: Adaptive seeds, Baker Creek Seeds, Green Journey Seeds, Renee’s Garden Seeds, Seed Savers Exchange, The Thyme Garden, and Territorial Seed Company. All the seed companies we carry have made the Safe Seed Pledge.
Prevention:
Be sure to treat existing fruit trees at the proper times to ensure prevention of disease and pests. January is a great time to spray peach/nectarine trees for leaf curl. Check out our handy Spray Schedule to keep track of when/what to apply for best results.
Maintenance:
Now is a good time to do Soil Testing to see if your garden requires any additional nutrients before planting. Replace or apply mulch around plants that need it. Don’t forget to water plants that are covered/protected from the elements.
“Anyone who thinks that gardening begins in the spring and ends in the fall is missing the best part of the whole year. For gardening begins in January with the dream.”
