Planning:
Planning and Prepping are the first steps to growing your garden this year. Gardeners love to plan, and many of us are looking through our favorite seed catalogs with growing anticipation of all the vegetable, herb, and flower choices available. Consider keeping a Gardening Journal to plan what crops you would like to grow and where- it’s also valuable to take notes you can reference in the years to come!
Planting:
Believe it or not, it’s time to start Planting Seeds Indoors. The excitement of growing plants from seed is unmatched for many, and we are proud to offer a large and diverse selection of seeds for the home gardener. With most due to arrive by mid-January, look for longtime favorites along with new 2024 varieties from: Adaptive seeds, Baker Creek Seeds, Renee’s Garden Seeds, Seed Savers Exchange, Willamette Wildings, The Thyme Garden, and Territorial Seed Company. We are super excited to also include a new seed line to our garden department, Uprising Seeds. All seed companies we carry have made the Safe Seed Pledge.
Prevention:
Be sure to treat existing fruit trees at the proper times to ensure prevention of disease and pests. January is a great time to spray peach/nectarine trees for leaf curl. Check out our handy Spray Schedule to keep track of when/what to apply for best results.
Maintenance:
Now is a good time to do Soil Testing to see if your garden requires any additional nutrients before planting. Replace or apply mulch around plants that need it. Don’t forget to water plants that are covered/protected from the elements.
