About Carniolan Bees

This 3 pound package includes 9,000 to 12,000 Carniolan honey bees and one marked queen. There are approximately 3,000 to 4,000 honey bees per pound. Carniolan honey bees, Apis mellifere carnica, are the second most popular type of honey bees.  They are native to Slovenia, southern Austria, and parts of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria.  Carniolan honey bees are gentle, typically non-aggressive, and quickly adapt to changes in their environment.  They overwinter well with smaller numbers and do a great job conserving winter honey stores.  Some beekeepers have found Carniolan bees better to handle brood disease.  Carniolan honey bees are very adept at adjusting worker population to nectar availability.  They meet periods of high nectar with high worker population and also store large quantities of honey and pollen during these periods.
