About Carniolan Bees

This package includes one Marked Carniolan Queen Honey Bee. Carniolan honey bees, Apis mellifera carnica, are the second most popular type of honey bee. They are native to Slovenia, southern Austria, and parts of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. Carniolan queen bees will lay Carniolan worker bee eggs, hence creating a colony of Carniolan honey bees.

Carnolian honey bees are known to be gentle, have less tendency to rob, able to overwinter in smaller numbers, conserve honey stores well, and are able to adapt quickly to changes in the environment. They are also known to more prone to swarming if overcrowded, have a low ability to thrive in long, hot summers, and have a higher dependency on the availability of pollen.

The international queen bee marking color for 2024 is green, so our queens will be marked with a small dot of green paint on her back (thorax).
