Description
This 3 pound package includes 9,000 to 12,000 Italian honey bees and one marked queen. There are approximately 3,000 to 4,000 honey bees per pound. Italian honey bees, Apis mellifera lingustica, are the most popular type of honey bees. Originating from the continental part of Italy, south of the Alps and North of Sicily, since they are adaptable to most climates ranging from subtropitcal to cool temperate they are less successful in humid tropical regions. Italian honey bees are industrious and hygienic bees that are reluctant to swarm. They build strong comb and use little propolis which makes tending the hive a bit easier. They are also excellent foragers, although they tend to forage over shorter distances than other types of bees. Italian honey bees are less able to cope with hard winters and cool, wet springs because they don’t form very tight winter clusters which make them prone to losing their heat faster. They also have a tendency to raise brood into late fall. Because of these reasons, they tend to consume more food which means you will need to leave more food on for them in the late fall, winter and early spring months if you live in more northern regions of the US.
