Description
This package includes one Marked Italian Queen Honey Bee. Italian honey bees, Apis mellifera ligustica, are the most popular type of honey bees. Originating from the continental part of Italy, south of the Alps and north of Sicily, they are adaptable to most climates ranging from subtropical to cool temperate. Italian queen bees are known to be very fertile and will lay Italian worker bee eggs, hence creating a colony of Italian honey bees.
Italian honey bees are known to be industrious, clean, reluctant to swarm, strong comb builders and excellent foragers. They are also known to be inclined to excessive brood rearing, more prone to robbing, and tend to forage over shorter distances. They also can consume more food in the winter due to them not forming as tight of a cluster needed to maintain the heat of the colony as well as more food in the fall due to the prolonged brood production.
The international queen bee marking color for 2024 is green, so our marked Italian queens will be marked with a small dot of green paint on her back (thorax).
